if you connect you broadband modem to the switch only one computer will be able to access the internet at a time. You need to purchase a router and connect that to the modem and the switch.

this is not a good idea. When you plug the modem direct to your switch, you would expose you whole network to the outside world. NOT a good thing and a hacker's dream and you would expose all your computers/printers

You would need a firewall device between your network and your internet connection. A relatively cheap (under $1K) solution is SonicWall (www.sonicwall.com) which will sufficiently protect your network from hackers while giving you full VPN (Virtual Private Network) access to all of your network resources.

You can get SonicWall from most internet computer stores or through your ISP (maybe).
