there are actually many types of limestone and these types differ depending on certain conditions they were formed. they can be formed either inorganically (precipitation of calcium carbonate) or by physical accumulation of bioclastics (such as pieces of shells, coral fragments etc)..

natural chalk is one example of limestone that was formed because of the accumulation of small organisms such as coccoliths.. coquina is limestone composed of shell fragments glued together by precipitated calcium carbonate (which came from the shells itself).. in some areas, we find big formations of old coral reefs that have been exposed due to the lowering of sea level or by tectonic upheavals and we also call them limestone..

some limestone form features such as stalactites and stalagmites along the ceilings and floors of caves respectively.. these were formed through precipitation when slightly acidic water reacts with limestone formations resulting to precipitation of carbon carbonates (main component of limestone stalagmites and stalactites)..

limestone formations are one of the most common features of the earth.. we find them almost everywhere... reason for this? because most of these limestone form under the sea/oceans which comprise the bulk of the earth's surface...

Where To Find Limestone Rocks

Marble is formed by metamorphosed limestone. NOT the other way around. Limestone is formed by the accumulation of marine organisms that make their shells from calcium carbonate. It is found in lots of places, especially those that used to be or are still deep marine environments. It is used for lots of things. Construction, antacids, the white powder on chewing gum, etc, etc. Look up commercial uses for limestone (try wikipedia) and it should give you a good list.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite (calcium carbonate: CaCO3), in other words the shells of dead sea creatures. It is formed in deep ocean basins where the water is cool and has little movement. As stated above it has many uses.
Here are a couple of sites I found about limestone and it's uses;

Also, if you ignore the questions this site has some good info
