I would imagine that physical abuse tends to involve a significant degree of emotional abuse, depending upon circumstance and the relationship between the perpetrator and victim.
One might also go as far as to suggest that physical abuse without emotional abuse is not really abuse at all as such suggests some kind of agreement between the parties involved.
Admittedly a victim might just be strong enough of will not to take physical abuse personally in which case it clearly becomes the emotional abuse what would cause most harm.
I guess this adds up to a both and none answer.

They are both terrible but i would have to say physical is the worst. Because when you have those terrible wounds, they might heal, but they leave marks behind. Marks that cannot always be removed. These scars are always a reminder of the pain the person went through. And with this reminder comes along emotional problem. I think with with physical abuse, comes along emotional abuse. But never Vise Versa.

There can be emotional abuse without physical abuse. Physical abuse, however, always includes emotional abuse. Even once the scars heal, the emotional damage remains. So... in that case, because physical abuse includes both... I'd have to say physical abuse is worse.

Well unfortunately I have suffered BOTH types (and if you want to add sexual abuse in there as well.. been there too).
Emotional abuse is FAR more hurtful then ANYTHING physical! Remember that verse that we said as kids, "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me!" What a friggin LIE!! LOL Its the words that hurt the MOST!
When someone cuts down your self worth, you self respect and makes you feel so insignificant and worthless.. it takes A LOT of time to heal from that!! Especially when its someone that you love or an elder who is SUPPOSED to take care of you!! My step father abused me mentally and physically.. yet I dont remember much about the physical crap... however I DO remember every single word he said to hurt me!
At 8 yrs old he told me that my mother hated me. That the ONLY reason that she kept "custody" of me was because my father didnt want me either. That I was nothing but trouble to them and that life would be so much better if I had never been born! Thank GOD my mother divorced that *** hole!!
My mother and I have a WONDERFUL relationship and she is my BEST friend. NOTHING that he said was true... yet it STILL took YEARS to "get over" and still at night sometimes, those words go around in my head and hurt me still!
So to answer your question... EMOTIONAL is FAR WORSE then physical!

Physical abuse is also emotional abuse. Trying to determine which is "worse" depends on the individual perspectives based on experiences and the effects they experience. Either or both can cause Post traumatic stress. Left untreated this can result in permanent mental disabilities.

You're lucky if you are never physically abused. Because this will transfer into emotional abuse eventually! Therefore, emotional & physical will haunt you forever unless you take yourself away from those types of people who continue to attack you... Neither has a preference as to which one is worse. It depends on the person who is receiving it & how they can handle it...

Physical abuse can cause emotional problems also. So I believe physical abuse would be worse, but emotional abuse is almost as bad!

Physical is the worst because it always always always accompanies emotional abuse. You cannot strike someone without harming them emotionally as well. They compliment eachother. You can however emotionally abuse someone without touching them or even being in the same room with them.

emotional abuse i think is worse because the bruises go away but the hurtful things stick in the back of you mind while you tend to block out the physical part of it all
