Changing your name in the UK will cost you £3 using a statutory declaration at a solicitors, it takes 5 minutes. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau can help you with a sample copy of how it should read. You are supposed to notify everyone in writing that you have dealings with that you have changed your name.

If you change your name you are never legally obliged to tell anyone other than those that you already have dealings with, that you have changed your name. Important documents that you will need to get changed are your NI number, Driving licence, and passport. The one thing in the UK that you cannot change though is your birth certificate. So if your name is Pricilla and you have a sex change and go by the name of Harold, your birth certificate will still have your birth name and gender.

If you cancel and pay off all your debts before you change your name, and then move immediately afterwards, you could theoretically have no credit file, but at least you won't have a bad credit file. If you do not apply for credit for three years after you move then you will not even have to state your previous address in most cases. As in the UK a credit file is compile on the individuals name and address, unlike other countries that are asked for Social Security Numbers etc, in the UK there is no unique number that you have to provide to identify yourself. You can build your credit with store cards, but just use them enough to build credit, and pay them off in full each month as they have extortionate rates.

Names can be changed in two ways:

Pick a new name and consistently use it. This is called "common usage."
Go through a more formal court process.
Both are equally legitimate. However, you can't just change your name to anything you want. Here are the main limiations:

You can not change your name if you have "fraudulent intent," meaning that you're trying to avoid bankruptcy by becoming someone else.

You can not change your name in the hope of messing with a trademarked name. For instance, you can't rename yourself Merrill Lynch and open a stock brokerage house. This also applies to giving yourself the name of a famous person. You can't legally change your name to Meryl Streep and then try to make money off of your new name.

You can not use numbers in your name, like 911, in order to intentionally confuse people. You also can not use symbols (ampersands, percent signs, whatever). However, you can add Roman numerals to the end of your name if you want a pretentious one like Winthrop Winterbottom IIIVVXXI. (It is unclear whether the artist formerly known as Prince is aware that his symbol is far from legitimate.)

Naughty or violent words are not allowed by the courts, nor is anything with a racial slur. Yes, there are porn stars who give themselves rather questionable names, but these are often stage names and are treated as nicknames.

If you're a minor, you need to have a court decision. This often occurs when parents get divorced and a child wants to join his/her mother in using her maiden name.

When you change your name, everything on or owed to your old name is carried over. It doesn't change a thing in your life except that you probably have to wait a few hours at the department. It is very easy although i've not changed mine. You need to hand in your ID book so that they can change it accordingly.

More importantly you need to inform all of your friends. distant realtives etc. Quite time consuming.

Good luck with the new name!

Women change their names all the time when they get married. It is mostly about filling out the paperwork and filing it with the court and stuff. And you don't change your identity so your credit will be the same because you keep the same dob, ssn etc. So if you're changing your name to get out of paying debts, it won't work.

Because financing is run on your social security number, your name really doesn't matter at all. It won't change your financial status. It costs about $140 to change your name. (If you get married, it costs whatever the marriage license costs.) All you have to do is file some paperwork with your nearest district court. You must also take the paperwork with you (and ID) to the closest Social Security Administration office. They will issue you a new card.

Go to a solicitor and ask for a deed poll change form. Then you can change your name to whatever you chose. The thing you have to remember to do is tell your bank and other creditors!! Otherwise they can sue you.

you can call yourself anything you like as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes. howeer, if you want it done properly you should go to a solicitor and do it by deed poll.
however, it will not get you credit as when you apply you are asked if you have ever been known by any other name and what they were and if you lie you can get done.

Go ahead and change your name -- but, doesn't mean you are changing your Social security number--thats yours for life -- and thats what mortgage companies -- credit bureaus -- etc use..not your name.

You can call yourself anything you want as long as it is not to defraud, however having reread your question I think that is exactly what you want to do, so sorry, can't help.
