Is it? I've heard mixed reactions and I don't know what to expect when I attend UC Merced this fall.

I don't mean just UCM, but in general....is it just about making friends or is there more to it?

The experience is a difficult one unless you are going to school with some friends. Living in the dorms for me was pure hell because I got a room mate who had bad foot odor and the room always smelled. On top of that kids in my dorm would get drunk urinate on the elevator and pull the fire alarms at all times of the morning. If you were caught in your room during the alarm you were fined $200 by the fire marshal. Does that sound fun to you.

My sophomore year was a hell of a lot better.

This is your first real journey into freedom and independence. The security factor of mom and pop and your high school friends is fading, and reality will confront you daily with new decisions, trials and errors, and your future waiting to be crafted.

Sounds scary, but this will be exhilarating and challenging. Everyone else you meet as a Freshman will be going through the same emotions, and that starts your bond. If you hide from it, the experience won't be a good one. Meet people, find out who and what they are, and share your experience with them. A fair percentage will not survive the first year, with either too much partying and distractions to keep grades up, or they don't have proper goals. You won't find another place like it, so enjoy the experience! The rest of your life will be based upon your educational efforts, so concentrate on your studies, but join in on the fun stuff. You'll find your nitch, and will be happy you stuck it out. Good luck!

I loved it from the get go !!! All of my life I will remember that first year of college as a time of making life long friends, becoming more independent, and realizing that I was moving forward in life....not backward.

Your first year of college is very important!!! You must go in ready to apply yourself, don't be naive because there will be non focused students there who will try to distract you. Don't get me wrong you have to be sociable so you don't get bored! Good luck & much success...
