Interesting responses. I would call an alcoholic someone who has to drink at regular times, whether it is two drinks a day or every weekend. It doesn't matter how much or what drunken state you get to. No wonder our world has such a problem with alcholism. I can't believe the answers. THere are very few knowledgable people answering this.

Excessive and repetitive drinking of alcoholic beverages to the extent that the drinker repeatedly is harmed or harms others. The harm may be physical or mental; it may also be social, legal, or economic. Because such use is usually considered to be compulsive and under markedly diminished voluntary control, alcoholism is considered by a majority of, but not all, clinicians as an addiction and a disease.

I am an alcoholic, but I have been sober for almost 9 years.
My definition: If you can't stop drinking once you start, or you never know for sure if you will be able to stop once you start, you're an alcoholic. It doesn't matter what you drink, how much, or how often. All that matters is what it does to you.

I don't think your interpretation of the word is strict enough. When you take the 2nd drink of alcohol of your life you immediately become an alcoholic because you repeated the act of drinking. Even if you never have another drink after that, for as long as you live, you'll still only be a "recovering alcoholic", right? Two drinks in one life is one too many as far as I'm concerned.
Why do you ask?

A person who has become powerless over alcohol and their life has become unmanageable. And with the help of many programs alcoholics can recover if they really want it. AA and the people in it have made my life a real blessing. Yes - I am a recovering alcoholic with a sobriety date of December 9, 2000.
