you take the amount of points scored against the pitcher times 9 divided by how many innings he pitched..
example: yanks score 3 points against red sox so take 3 times 9 which is 27 and lets say schillings pitched 7 innings so divided 27 by 7 which is 3.85

ERA(Earned Run Average) means how much runs you will give in per 9 innings. Lets say a pitcher goes 6 innings and gives up 4 Runs. If you convert that into 9 innings he would of given up 6 runs. So his ERA would be 6.00.

In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the mean of earned runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings pitched. It is determined by multiplying the number of earned runs allowed by nine and dividing by the number of innings pitched.
