Assuming your are talking about the U.S. (in some other countries, a law degree is an undergraduate degree), you need to have completed a bachelor's degree (normally 4 years). Almost all lawyers then go to law school, which is a 3-year (full time) professional school program.
Your bachelor's degree can theoretically be in any subject matter, but most law schools want to see that you can handle extensive reading and writing, so having a degree in a subject matter which requires those things can help in law school admissions. The most common pre-law degree is in political science, but my law school class had people whose undergraduate degrees were in everything from biology to engineering to accounting to hotel and restaurant management, so it is clear that you don't HAVE to choose a particular major.
You'll notice that I said that ALMOST all lawyers go to law school. It isn't legal in all states, but in some, it is possible to study under the supervision of a judge without going to law school before taking the Bar exam. I met one such person; he was an older immigrant with a family who could not afford to take time during regular hours to go to law school classes or to pay tuition, and a judge took him under his wing. Unlike most people who try this route (and there aren't many), he actually passed the Bar exam on the first try and was a practicing attorney.

Regular school = 4 years. Can be liberal arts but is typically pre-law.
Law school can last anywhere from 2 to 4 years.
Then you have the exam which in itself takes a lot of studying and can require additional time to pass.

Four years of under-graduate study (though, more is recommended), and a Juris Doctor degree from a law institution (approx. four years to procure)
