If Alex Smith continues to progress and if Frank Gore stays healthy, I think it's practically a sure thing that they'll win their very weak division. The Seahawks' offensive stars (Walter Jones, Hasselbeck, Alexander) are getting old and their talents are declining, and the Rams just don't have the defense to win the division, having Steven Jackson and Torry Holt can only get you so far. The 49ers were a decent team last year, they had a great offseason, and their division may be the weakest in the entire NFL. Together, I think these factors spell division championship for the 49ers.

They can make the playoffs if they could stay healthy. With their rising talent on offensive (Alex Smith, Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis), the additions on defense (Nate Clements, Tully Banta-Cain, and Michael Lewis), and the trade for Darrell Jackson, I think that they will be able to win the NFC West this year.
Seattle has only gotten worse over the offseason, and the Rams/Cardinals always look promising, but never do anything productive.
49ers will end up 9-7 or 10-6 and win the west.

Such a tough call...
Their division is all pretty even and if they want to make the playoffs they will have to go atleast 4-2 vs the Rams, Cardinals & Seahawks
They can do it...
But the odds are stacked up against them
They are definetely improving but so is the rest of that division
That division has gone from worst to average and is gonna be one of the better ones in 2 years

Defitnly. I see them taking the NFC West title this year. Alex Smith has improved a lot, and now he has Vernon Davis back for a healthy year and he's dangerous. Gore is gonna have an entire offseason working on his ball carying and he'll be good too. Joe Staley will really improve your O-Line and Patrick Willis will do great in the 3-4. Nate Clements bolstered the secondary as well. Sleeper team in my mind.

Yes, because the NFC West sucks and it's what really gives them a shot. Last season they barely made it despite a horrible defense.
It usually takes 3 years for a good QB to develop and with the new weapons, this could be Alex Smith breakthrough year. Also they have an improved secondary with Nate Clements and Michael Lewis.

yes. think about it. we could have easily been 9-7 or even 10-6 verus 7-9 -LAST YEAR.
this is a playoff year. All we lacked last year (besides some defense help) was a break out wide out. Even while lacking one Smith still managed to have a much improved second year. Once we get our tight end situation under control and once we see what we got in jackson-we'll be pretty solid i say.
10-6 at best-8-8 at worse

I'd say no to this year. They have some work to do. Maybe in a couple of seasons they can get to the playoffs, but not this year for sure.
