I'm pretty new to iTunes and was wondering if I need to be online to sync my mp3s or to transfer them to an ipod? Does iTunes work offline, on its own, after it's been downloaded or do I have to connect to the internet every time I want to use it?

I was also wondering if I can download songs onto my ipod from several different computers or if it's restricted to a particular computer due to copyright concerns or something like that?
Thanks!

Yes, it works offline to manage your song library and sync your iPod because your songs are stored on your hard drive;
you only need to go online to access the iTunes Store, to download music from other sources if you so choose, or to perform software updates.
You can also go online to view the many support options at the Apple website, including this New User Guide:

and the iPod + iTunes for Windows FAQ:

and the iPod + iTunes main support page:

Enjoy!

Yeah! It works offline. Now whenever you have to do an update or you're gonna access the iTunes store you need internet for it to do the update or be able to gain access to the store. If you just need to pass some songs from your computer to your ipod or mp3 player you dont need to be online. Have fun!

OK, the REAL question is, especially for people who use Itunes on their mac (or pc) as a player, how do you use itunes offline, since functionality is interrupted when the internet is down.

It works offline after the initial download and you can download songs from multiple computers that you hook up to as long as that computer also has itunes. Just click on the check box that says manage music manually in the summary tab once the ipod is connected. after that you can "drag" music from the computer to the the ipod
