Barry Sanders

Jim Brown was the toughest back.

Barry Sanders the most elusive.

Gayle Sayers the fastest.

Yet, no one was/is more complete than Walter Payton. I mean the guy was one of the toughest, most elusive and fastest backs ever. That's just the start. He still reigns as the Chicago Bears all-time leader receiver...He led the NFL in kick returns one year...Started a couple of games at QB and threw for double digit touchdowns in his career....Yet, if you asked all those around him what his greatest skill was...it wasn't running, throwing, returning, kicking (he kicked a couple of XPs) or receiving. It was Blocking! Walter is still considered the all-time best blocking back in football. He used to regularly de-cleat charging defensive linemen to protect his QB.

Walter was the true rennaisance man in football. Some could do certain things in the game better, but none could do them all like Sweetness. And don't even bring up guys like Emmit Smith or LT...neither are in the top 7-8 all time.

This is the easiest answer on the site.

1. Barry Sanders (easily)
2. Walter Payton
3. Jim Brown
4. LaDainion Tomlinson (yes he's this good, maybe better)
5. Gale Sayers

*would have loved to see what Bo Jackson could have done
*Emmitt Smith get ZERO consideration from me. The Cowboys o-line could have been one of the greatest ever though

Walter Peyton. Your talking about a guy who was based around other team's defense. He Won a super bowl. To show how many people saw him as a threat, look at the super bowl where ther Bears played the Patriots, Peyton didnt score a touchdown but was a big decoy. If there was a fake or real handoff to Peyton everybody would flow to him leaving three wide recivers open. Peyton was also not asfraid to block. He was a big and strong running and blocking back.

Currently (and potentially of all time) I would say LT

But the best of all time... still would have to say Walter Payton. Both on the field and off. Class, talent and a God-given gift.

I think eventually LT could match him, simply because he possesses the same sort of characteristics.

IMO The best running back of all time - hands downs - Barry Sanders.

The guy played on mediocre (or less) teams his whole career and was still able to put up records and bust some of the greatest highlight film moves you will ever see.
If you put him on the Cowboys team of the 90s with the O' line the Cowboys had, Barry's records would have far exceeded Emmits. (Not to say Emmit wasn't good)
