I lost my tortoise on Saturday evening when he was walking around the backyard. I always let him out in the backyard but he is always easy to find. But now he is NOWHERE in the backyard. He is a russian tortoise. I have found two holes under my fence that lead to different neighbors houses and I have already checked one and I was going to check the other neighbors house today. My dad says that he is still in the backyard but I know he isn't, my dad also says that a tortoise wouldn't go under a fence but what do you guys think? Where else would he go?!?!? My dad said that he would show up eventually but my Tony(my tortoise) goes where he wants to all the time. What should I do? Where is he? He is 4.5 inches long.

They are good at hiding. Yes, he could have gotten under the fence. He also could have dug himself under a little bit of dirt and is hiding under a bush. Do you have any friends with terriers or dogs? Many dogs can sniff out turtles. Watch where the dog sniffs and check out each spot. My dog used to find my turtle in the yard when I was a kid. Have a bunch of friends come over and look in all the surrounding yards--check every square inch of property very carefully. Put signs out and tell all your neighbors to look out for him. Tortoises can travel pretty far faster than you think, so you might look around the whole block! Good luck.

There are a million stories of tortoises popping up after a week of intensive, fruitless searching- just suddenly being there. There are also a million stories of them showing up a half-mile away.

It is PROBABLY in the yard in a hidden, shady place and it will stay there until it feels like moving.

Search the yard carefully, inch by inch. But play it safe and put up 'LOST PET' flyers as well- just in case!
