Within the last 10 to 15 years city and county governments have begun using GIS (Geographical Information Systems). Most have a GIS department.

To find out if your county has the information in an accessible website, go to the county website and search for GIS. Usually the county has some access showing satellite images, roadways, parks, etc. It is available by parcel number or address. Usually it will bring up the names and addresses of the neighbors for permitting purposes.

The city in my area is attempting to annex the subdivision where I live and they have indeed been monitoring our whole subdivision. We attended the city council meeting last week and were shocked when they showed a progression of ariel photos of the whole subdivision, showing who added animals, who built outbuildings and etc. I used to think the idea of big brother watching was based on paranoia, but now I know they really do it -- I've seen the evidence.

Here is a sample website: http://www.co.weld.co.us/departments/gis.html Go to the bottom of the page and click on the link. It will bring you to a disclaimer before it lets you into the mapping section.
