You say "there is a satellite in the sky visible from my house" which doesn't make sense for a satellite. Most satellites are in constant motion, moving roughly the same speed as a high flying aircraft. If this object is more or less stationary, it is probably not a satellite. There are geostationary satellites, but they are quite faint and require a telescope to see. Is what you're seeing roughly stationary, and in the west or northwest? Then it's most likely the planet Venus.

Nasa has around 8000 satellites in the skies. You can get the list from their site. It includes the shuttle (when it is up!) and the station.
www.satsig.net will give you the list of the satellites in geostationary orbit. (Geosats are 100k high: you won't see them without a telescope).

There are hundreds of satellites orbiting the earth and someone knows which one you refer to, try contacting NASA, they may be able to help.

'The Moon'

(however I'm going to guess it's actually Venus that you are looking at :-) :-) )
