Does one credit hour equal one semester??

Each class is 3 credit hours, but when you click on the class is says i need so many hours of lecture time. I don't know how to explain this any better so go to PPCC.com (pikes peak community college) and look up Interior Design in programs under Academics. If you click on, lets say ART110, it says 3 credit hours, but that i need 45 contact hours. OY!

No.

Here's an explanation I found from a student on one forum:

"OK, let's say one student takes four classes at a semester school, and another student takes four classes at a quarter school. The semester student would be carrying a 12 credit load. The quarter student would be carrying a 16 credit load-even for taking the very same courses as the semester student.

"From my experiences, for example, the students may be receiving the same amount of material in the classroom, however, the quarter student is receiving assignments, exams, and other course work related material more often during each term since there's less weeks in the quarter system to complete all course work.

"Quarter system is about 10 weeks of instruction plus one week of final exams (11weeks total). Semester system is about fifteen weeks of instruction plus one week of final exams (16 weeks total).

"Each one (1) semester credit hour equals 1.5 quarter credit hours. So a 3 credit course at a semester college is a 4.5 credit course at a quarter college (3*1.5)." --

I find that this totally depends on your school and specific class. Some schools go by how many days you actually attend class in a week, others go by the actual hours you are in class.

An example...Columbia has foreign languages, usually 4 or 5 credits. Some classes are three days a week and others are twice a week but the credit is dependent on the class hours. With Physical Education, all activties are only 1 credit but some you meet 1 day a week for maybe 5 hours (like hiking) and others you meet twice a week for 1 hour intervals.

Best bet is to check with you school! :)

Each course has so many credit hours: the typical number is 3 credit hours per course (if the course lasts a semester).
