I love a well thought up advert that makes me laugh - but the very next adverts I want to throw my TV out the window!

Adverts, are at best, a useful pain!
No! they do not improve the quality of our life, on the contrary, they are filling our time and minds with unnecessary images and sounds. They are the strongest tools for a disastrous consumer society!

No. They may prove entertaining but they do more harm than we give them credit for. For example just go and check how many people in the "diets & fitness" section ask about weight loss. Adverts sell us unrealistic images on what life should be: being thin and rich, owning a car, owning the latest phone, fashion accessorie or toy. When these adverts affect people who already have issues with their appearance (like all teens) or not enough money, we get a society of anorectic and bulimic teens who are 20 grand in debt by the time they get out of school. It is then that they realise that the rest of their lives is spent working any job they can to pay for those adverts. In My opinion: Not fair, not right.

TV adverts are a passing diversion and have no effect on the quality of life as such. However, a momentary fleeting happiness or as you say, frustration, can occur with a spark of genius.
The best adverts are the simple ones. Either humorous which we remember because they make us laugh, or those intensely irritating ones which have music that you can't get out of your head, or make you sit there thinking why? Each clever in their own way as they have your momentary attention.
Favourites at the moment are the Ribena ones which preceed and follow "Grease Is The Word", and the skateboarding car. (UK)

Worst one is a treatment for nail diseases. The name rhymes with criminal (loosely) and the tag line is something like "Use Curenail as it's better than being a criminal" - to think someone was paid to think up that tripe!

Best ever advert "Cinzano" - Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins or "Smash" mashed potato! (Oh and the diet coke ones with the gorgeous men!)

I think the general idea of an advert is to bring a product or service to your attention in the hope that you may buy or use it....Now some of them make me laugh and are very original but the advert does not improve my quality of life one jot....the product may have some impact, but I have yet to buy any product purely on the impression made by an advert....so the short answer is no they don't, but thanks for asking.....

As to improving it, no, but they give me a chance to dash off to the loo or grab a cuppa!
If you want a giggle, turn the sound off on one of those snack adverts with "cutie kiddies" and just watch their faces. Without the happy music and voice overs, they often look less than thrilled!
I think insurance, loan and bank adverts should be banned!! Not to mention all injury claims adverts!!

It depends on what you seek. If you are in the ad industry, other ads can generate ideas and be a measuring stick to compare your own against. Some ads have beautiful settings, or objects, or camera work, all of which can inspire others interested in related fields, i.e. design (architecture, interior, industrial, clothing, graphic, etc.), arts (photography, cinematography, dance, acting, comedy, etc.) although the qaulity has to be good in order to have any proper value.

Unfortunately most ads are designed to sell products with the least amount of cost to the client, which inevitably leads to inferior products (ads).

Of course we can use the argument that ads pay for the services and contents provided by the TV channels, magazines, news papers, internet sites, etc. and thus saves the consumer money resulting in us recieving the contents at affordable prices or even for free (besides the time taken up by viewing the ads). Thus ads indirectly can improve our quality of life if the contents or services of that which it sponsers are any good.

No. they encourage the "I want....must have" throw away society that we live in. Just observing the number of phones people at work get through is nearly funny if it wasn't so disgusting. That is one example of many I could give. If people thought for two seconds "Do I actually need this?" the world might be a nicer place to live. Also we might have products that are designed to last more than six months.

How can an advert improve the quality of anyones life?

It can make them smile, laugh or cry, it can annoy them, it can make them think but improve life quality?

I think adverts are useful cos they show me how to get a loan to pay for all the kids in Ubangiland who need just £2 a month.

Well, I ignore the ads anyways, so they're not as useful as the companies are supposed to make them out to be.

I like well thought ones too...like the Cingular commercials when people have their dropped calls. And there are commercials like Geico or the car insurance with the dog puppet that makes me want to throw the remote at the TV.

But that means I would have to get up and get the remote if I did that.
