They go to the same place for the same time every Monday and someone broke in. They've lived in the same neighborhood for over 40 years. Obvisouly they are elderly and now we know, don't keep the same routine, other than that, what should they do, not do?

Call the police, file a report, and install an alarm system. If they're in good enough shape to take care of it, get a dog. My dad was a police officer, and he told me once that the sound of a barking dog is usually MUCH more of a deterrent than any alarm system.

Okay of course call the police and tell them what happened and everything.

Then you should try and suggest to them to get an alarm system.

A dog may be another way to go like what theresacrider said.

Also tell them that before they leave the house or go to sleep to make sure all the doors and windows and anything else that thieves could get into the house through, is locked. Also that the alarm system is set.

Start by cleaning the house that got ransacked.

Next get a gun and an alarm system.
