I have a banded cat shark that will not eat. He is about a year old and for the passed two months has wanted to eat, but cannot swallow due to a sore throat. Pet specialists told me to add iodine to the water and that worked for about 2 weeks but stopped. He ate fine ever since birth. I feed him shrimp squid and clams, etc and I think he may have a goiter, sometimes he manages to swallow a piece but hes getting very skinny, can anyone relate or help me out? I clean my tanks well and he shares the 150 gallon with an eel so they both have plenty of space.

Only antibiotic treatment can help your fish to heal.

Thing is i have read were if the iodine is low for some animals they get goiters. From what people have said over at saltwaterfish.com its comman in these sharks but no one over there really had a idea of curing it. I'm going back to water changes once a week and will keep adding iodine to the water and see if this works. its not a parasite cause he would have been dead like what was said a long time ago. His fins and the rest of his body is in good shape and he swims around looking for food. He grabs at the food on the feeding stick then just keeps spitting the food out a million times.. Some people claim B12 shots help fish that are having problems or growths/goiters. Either way there is something wrong with his mouth.... I hate this :( thanks for replies

I seriously doubt the fish has a sore throat or an infection in his throat, if it were an infection for 2 months the fish would be dead by now. If you see a growth of some type in the fish, it would most likely be a tumor and is certainly not a goiter (fish don't get those). With a bit of searching or simply asking the staff you can probably get a far more complete answer here:

Hope that helps and best of luck to you in the treatment!

he could have an internal parasite, there are plenty of meds on the market to treat this. weightloss and unusual behaviour can be signs of this.

you are keeping him in a saltwater tank yes? just checking.

Use anitbiotic, and try to tempt him with other seafoods, and btw do not try copper ,it will kill him.I think he got a disease from the fresh foods that you are giving him.sera products work well,at least for me,
