our desert tortoise is covered with a white, chalky "fungus" on his shell. It started at his tail and in a day or so was all over the shell. We bathed him and washed it off. Any info on this?

If it is growing a fungus, the habitat is far too damp. It could be a form of shell rot, dietary problems, mineral deposits, etc.

Step one is to review the cares for this species. Try http://www.tortoise.org for ideas.

For the actual cares, try swabbing the fungus with Betadine Solution at full strength and let it dry before returning the animal to its pen.
