aqueducts ... that might be fun!
there's a lot to read about them, she will learn a lot about history and physics at the same time, and ... it's summer! .. she'll enjoy playing with water (if she's expected to build one) ....

Spartans
Anthony and Cleopatra (how she was Eygptian at all and all about the war with Rome and such)
Caesar
She could go into arts and plays of Roman times
Wars
there are a lot of cool leaders
The politics of Rome. She could even say and go into how Rome was not even Democratic but a full Republic. And then she can compare and contrast how the US is actually a Republic and much mistaken for a Democratic society, and how a lot of our traits come from Rome.
Good luck!

She write a piece on what it would have been like to be a 9 year old from 2 contrasting points. As the child of an affluent family and as the child of the servant or slave. The upstairs down stairs approach.
Or how a boy would have been brought up and prepared for adulthood and how this contrasted to a girls up bringing and expectations.

You can make a roman mosaic. ( a 9 year old version of )
For the tiles you could use small colored buttons or anything small and that you have plenty pieces of in sufficiently varied colors. You could aslo just cut up colored paper into small squares. For the mortar you could improvise with clay or doh (or play doh... wonder if that's still around). If you really have time, plaster of paris is great... but that might be too ambitious for a 9 y.o.'s project.
Some ideas for the roman mosaic

Teach her some simple Roman Phrases. She can even find "Latin on the Web" and just have her do a short essay of a legal matter. Even doctors and lawyers cant write it anymore.. Search for " Blacks Law Dictionary" and Her Paper can Give Some Astounding INFO on the PROPER LAW AS IT IS INHERITED AS A SCIENCE. "IT AS BAD IDEA BUT SHE COULD JUST NOT SHOW UP FOR SCHOOL SINCE THEY VALUED THEIR FEMALE CHILDREN SO LOWLY THEY WOULD SELL THEM TO THIER OWN." JUST CALL IN AND SAY IN HONOR OF ROME, SHE IS HIDING FOR HER LIFE!! LOL.

The aquaducts are fascinating, some still working after a couple thousand years. Building a model would give her a chance to make a big wet mess, which kids generally love.

Make a posterboard about what Romans eat and send in olives or grapes. If not that, have her make a fancy shield.
