Why does the stars stand still whilst the planets move around in the sky?

Because the planets orbit the sun and most of them complete the orbit within human life time and thus appear to move in the background of stars. (even Pluto will move slightly within a week or so in the background of stars)

The stars also move but around the center of our galaxy and they take a very very long time and thus appear not to change. If you lived long enough then you would definitely see the stars change too...

Because the planets are millions of times closer than the stars. The stars are moving too, but they are so far away that we cannot notice their movement from day to day.

They all move with the rotation of the earth. However plants actaully orbit the sun which cause them to change position in the night sky.
