Yes. I think most people can make this connection. But it is not a bad thing. It can also mean flirtatious with some people in some cases.

I dont think it means youre shy but to me, twirling your hair typically conveys a flirtatious mood so that shy feeling may very well be the opposite.

If they are observant, they will probably notice. Body language says a lot about a person. It would tell me you are shy or very nervous.

I do that too sometimes. I dont think it has anything to do with being shy. Its just something girls do withour realizing they are doing it
