Yes, the "turtle" is either there or it isn't. And any good sonographer isn't going to mistake a penis for a cord. It's the girls that can be a little trickier.

The short answer is - if they don't see anything on the fuzzy picture that looks like boy bits, they assume it's a girl.

Of course, having an umbilical cord coming out from the baby in the same general neighbourhood might confuse things, but after years of reading the ictures, I imagine this sort of confusion doesn happen very often.

So really you're asking "how often do they make a mistake?". I don't know.

-------
From the old British comedy "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em":
Father - "Oh, it's a boy, wow, that's a big one."
Doctor - "It's a GIRL, Mr. Smith."
Father - "Well wot's that then?"
Doctor - "It's the umbilical cord!"

Yes, it's easier to tell if it's a boy for sure, because if it's a boy, there will be something to see between his legs:) If it's a girl, there won't be anything to see...but if you don't see anything, it could mean that the baby is turned funny or something. So, yes, I would say that it's easier to know that it's a boy -- especially at 30 weeks.

Yes -- if they see the penis, then generally you are having a boy. I haven't known anyone who was told they were having a boy and out popped a girl. Sometimes people have boys when they were told they were having a girl because the little boy was hiding his "package" from the sonogram.

Usually it just depends on what angle the baby is in and if the baby is stubborn. I am having a girl and the look for two white lines inbetween their legs but for a boy you just have to look for a stem. In a sense it is easier to see if it is a boy.
