The labour government introduced bank holidays many many years ago, as in times of old people didnt have paid holiday leave. Bank holidays were introduced (not all at the same time) to give the working class paid time off work to spend with their families. the may bank holidays were originally called labour days as 1st they were definately brought in by a labour government,2nd in 1960's britain people would mainly holiday in the british seaside resorts they could not afford to stay for a week or two so on labour day the working class would spend the the day at the english seaside, entire families would go, men would roll their trouser legs up,wear knotted hankies on their heads(sunhats for men weren't around much then) sit in deckchairs on the beach and give granny an ice cream, watch the kids make sandcastles and bury grand dad in the sand. It was something the kids would look forward to all year. Those were in the days when people appreciated what they had and not wished for what they had not got..it was a kind of thank you from the employer for all their hard work through out the year as Britain was mainly a manufacturing nation back then and it was at times very very hard backbreaking work,so i suppose you could call it a pick me up aswell.

I think it is just any day that the bank is closed. A bank holiday is any holiday in which the bank closes. They do not close on all holidays, just certain ones which are then called bank holidays.

Here in the US, some banks stay open through most of the holidays where others still close.

Bank Holiday originates from a time when banks were closed and trading, therefore; could not take place. Bank holiday is when banks are officially closed to the public. I am sure there is a valid reason for it, just like shops close on Sundays etc. to re-stock.

all holidays in Great Britain are controlled by the the bank of England so all holidays fall on a Monday except in the case of Christmas, Easter and new year so for example the 1st of may which is a Holiday will be a Holiday on the first Monday of the month so for this year the 7th of may was a holiday and this is for everybody on all holidays, we are very organized in Great Britain and this stops people taking more holidays than is stipulated such as in Spain where this year they took the 30th of April and the 1st of may as holidays in what they call "un puente" a bridge.
