They can be a friend, but you have to accept them for what they are. Don't take it personally if you end up being treated second rate, and don't expect much from this person. But if you enjoy their company, just hang out and enjoy the time together. If things get too bad, you can still always leave.

That is like asking if a person with Asperger's can ever be a friend, or an autistic person. Yes. But there will be some things you might have to be patient about and hope they will learn from your example a better way of being. Otherwise, you might want to go away if you are not wanting to really be their friend after all.
