My wife and I are planning to moved into an old apartment with small paint chips falling off of the bathtub. There is also some peeling paint behind the radiators. There is still time to back out if the landlord refuses to do anything about it. Should we be worried?

If the apartment was built before 1980 and the paint is original it could contain lead.

If it is a metal bath, the chips will be porcelain, so that should be OK, you can get small bottles of porcelain glaze at the hardware store.
Although you said it was an old apartment it will have been painted several times over the years so if the paint is in reasonable condition if probably isn't lead based

Did they give you a lead paint disclosure notice? In older buildings, this is definetely something to be aware of.
Often times, it has been painted over multiple times, so there is not much risk (from my understanding) BUT, if this landlord is not addressing your concerns, this could be the start of a a very bad relationship with multiple troubles. Take the omen my friend.
I'd say pass on the apartment (in writing) and find a landlord that is more attentive.

The main problem with lead paint chips is children injesting the chips or inhaling dust. If it is just you and your wife, then the main concern becomes aesthetics.

Here is some info on lead paint and homes: http://www.hud.gov/offices/lead/disclosurerule/index.cfm
