It is stamped in to the frame and on a tin placard under the hood a car of that age might not need correct vin number just get it changed when you retitle the car.

I don't know where you are located...But check your state laws, or at the very least, the state the car is titled in.

Several states require that the "VIN" follow the engine. Why? I don't know...seems stupid to me.

That said, an earlier poster said check under the hood. That's your best bet. Then compare those numbers to the engine VIN

Theoretically, they could, but they will need a lot more than just a VIN. With just a VIN, they will need to contact the dealership to get the specific key, and most dealerships will not make keys with just the VIN due to obvious security reasons. The VIN is nothing more than just an ID number.

Maybe the door post was replaced at some point in time. I assume you checked on the windshield where they are on newer cars? Are you sure the title is the right one for your car? I would check out both of these options.

look on top of the dashboard standing by the driver front fender. right above the instrument display panel every car should have it at that location. if you are standing in front of the car look on the right bottom corner of your winshild it should be there. you better pull a carfax on this one. this raises a lot of questions.
