I would say you go leave for maybe 2 hours because then you have to get back and go through security again.

If you're talking about Amsterdam airport, Schiphol... Yes, it is, but it's cutting it very close and you risk missing your flight. If you really have four full hours before you need to be back at the airport, you have enough time as a train takes you from the airport right into the heart of Amsterdam in about 20 minutes...

You might want to check if you're allowed to leave the airport though, I've had connecting flights where I wasn't and I don't think I ever had any where I was.

I would not stray away too far, you have to check in at least 2 hours before boarding time. You may be able to take an airport bus from Schiphol to the center of Amsterdam an stroll around for a while. No time for museums however.

I am not sure where you are going to be, somehow I ended up in Netherlands page, so perhaps you mean Amsterdam?

If you have customs to deal with, the answer is no.
By the time you clear out and have to get back to check in through customs, it will be cutting things close.

You might end up with an hour and a half if things go well. But you need a 2 hour checkin...

Can you rebook your flights to give you 8 hours or so?

Are you talking about Amsterdam? If so because you have to go through customs on the way out and then back through security on your way back I would have to say no. Not really. You might have enough time to go to the Maoz (falafel) stand in front of Central Station for a quick bite and then head back. Maybe head straight to a coffee shop for a quick J. but not much more than that.

It will be tight. Assuming you can check your luggage through then you will have passport control to go through 2 times. The train ride from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central is 20min.

So basically, you would have time to go to the center, catch a (short) canal cruise and then have to rush back to Schiphol. To get any kind of meaningful impression of Amsterdam in 1hour, it seems to me that a canal cruise is the way to go.

at schiphol i dont think so. once you landed it will take 1 hour at least to stand outside the building.
for checking you will need at least one hour also, so effectively you will have 2 hours to go outside the airport building. going to amsterdam 0.5 hour + 0.5 hour back, can you imagine all the stress you will get if you get stuck in the traffic ?
