I live out in the country. I have a tower set up to recieve a wireless signal from the city. I have a wireless router set up so that all the comps in the house can get on the net. My g-paw lives next door and the tech guys set up a dish reciever to get the signal from the router. Gpaw wants his house to have wireless too instead of plugging into the wire from the dish set up on his house. Do I use a router for that or what?

There is a wire coming from the dish reciever connected to his house that is plugged intoa little box, and from that box he can directly connect to the dish. Basically I want to connect that wire to a router so that there is a strong wireless signal in his house too.

Can it be done? How?

Thanks everyoen for spending time with this...

You would not beable to plug the cable in his house into a router as your router is the one sending a signal to him, atleast thats how you explained it.

I would take the cable from the dish in his house and plug it into a hub and then plug a access point into that to give hime wireless in his house. Your router will then controll all the computers in your two houses.

I have to make some assumptions here to answer your question. I take it the little box he connects to is a "wireless bridge" ? If so it should have a standard eithernet cable which connects it to his computer. If that is the case you can set a router up - just connect the ethernet to the "WAN" port of the new router. However, you will have to set the new router up so that it setsup a NEW network.

If your current system is on 192.168.1.1 (router address) you would need to configure his to be on a different range like 192.168.2.1 or it will conflict with your current setup. In all honesty.. you probably will need some help to do this as it is a little complex for the non-network familiar user..

not sure exactly what type of wireless and dishes you are referring to but I'll try:

the tech guys setup your g-paw with the same setup as you have? or something different?

Typically:
receiver\dish -> to receiver's interface (modem, or gateway\route\hub\switch)
interface to your wireless router
wireless router to computers

same thing for g'paw's setup
dish -> to dish interface to gpaw's router to computers

or if close enough (less than 250ft) share your wireless with g'paw,

if over 250ft, or poor signal strength, you buy a range extender antenna for your wireless router and share your internet to g'paw and don't need another setup for g'paw.

hope that helps.

bottom line, whatever wireless service you are receiving, it has to connect to the provider's own interface first, then to your router etc.
