Hotels where the bars have liquor locked inside small 'cupboards'! (Well they did when I was last there in the late 1970s!)
Friendly locals, especially around the Roanoke area.

Dawson's Creek, baby!! Which was filmed in Wilmington NC - a lovely town, which is on Cape Fear.
Also the Outer Banks I think.
It's a lovely, southern state, very friendly, I loved it.
Not much to do in Charlotte though.
