Pepper, it does depend on what is being said, but if there was a beautiful piece of text in another language would not you rather be able to get an understanding of it?

wax poetic, yes! as long as he doesn't paraphrase and lose the original text it would make it interesting.

No, he should translate exactly what is said, unless he's psychic how is he going to know that the other person is thinking? Imagine the confusion caused if he said what he thought they "really" meant? The whole reason for a translator is so that you can just say what you mean and have the other person understand it.

I think that is the way translating has developed - - - equal parts art and technical. The letter and the spirit captured, with neither slighted.

It Depends what he's translating, if it's a police interview (for someone who doesn't speak the language) it's probably better to stick to what's said, like I said depends on the context
