Saw the previews when I went to see a different movie...and it looks pretty good..

It looks fabulous, at least from the website (www.goldencompassmovie.com) and you can find your own daemon. I hope it's not all flash and no substance!
Philip Pullman has had some good things to say about the production-- he was particularly impressed with Dakota Blue-- and apparently does have *some* input, which gives me hope.
Movies and books are always two different creatures. In part that has to do with the mental processes involved: when reading, the reader is an active participant, taking in the information and creating mental interpretations of it, while in a movie we are getting someone else's interpretation. Our role becomes passive instead of active, and it changes the way we see the original work.
So-- mixed emotions.

Can't wait. Saw the theatre production of His Dark Materials at the National theatre in London last year and that was excellent.
Hope the film does the books justice.

I don't think so.... But then again, I'm biased. I've hated every single movie adaptation of a book. This might prove to be the exception though. Who can tell until it comes out anyway....

Is it a sequel to something because in the beginning of the trailer it says in 2001 we brought you to middle earth...blah blah ( I actually thought it was a lord of the rings prequel/sequel) Anyways it looks alright, nothing I'm rushing to the theatres to see.

Definitely has potential. I'll probably see that one in the theater.
