My guess is you won't get many on the left saying they support him or saying "Don't group all the people on the left with the people who support him".
I have noticed a movement of ideas going on in recent years, the farther to th left you go the more opposed to free speech (well anything they disagree with) people become. While on the right more and more people are demanding more freedom of speech.
I have family in Venezuela and I know my family is scared. they are middle class and educated and because of that they are seen as the enemy.
(Far) Leftism is no longer about equality it is about getting their way and silencing others, and that is disturbing to think they once stood for the opposite (pre-Vietnam).
Funny they claim bush is silencing freedom and can not prove it, but they can prove Chavez is silencing freedom (something he claims to protect) and they applaud.

Here in Venezuela we have always known Chavez to be a totalitarian monster who claims to be a socialist. Nothing farther than the truth, e.g., In 2003 he fired the entire personnel of the Venezuelan oil industry, 23 thousand persons, confiscating not only what was due to them by law, but also confiscating their life savings, throwing their children from their schools and their houses as well. Does this action seem to you as that of a modern socialist party of, say, Europe, or the dark doings of another Idi Amin?

I'm a mildly-left leaning moderate. Hugo Chavez scares me. You forgot to mention that thousands protested this action... THOUSANDS... maybe he isn't such a big hero after all to those who actually live under his rule. Personally I think that eventually what he is doing will backfire, they will get sick of his antics, and throw him out of office in disgrace - just watch, wait, and see what happens.

Now, imagine if Bush shut down CNN and NBC. Would the left be upset?
Why aren't they upset about this?
The Dems support Chavez and look at him as a hero even as he consolidates more and more power.
It's simply amazing. AND FRIGHTENING

Libs love Hugo Chavez, Castro, Stalin, Leinn, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot, Daniel Ortagea and any other leftist commie. Libs wish they could be commies, since they think that is so cool.

I think he just stepped in it, closing that TV station and in effect shutting down free speech. The citizenry is seeing up close and personal just what and who he is - a ruthless dictator and power-monger.
