I'm geussing your thinking about the logistics involved? I don't think your that ignorant to not know about how old farming is!
Well the simplist answer is that very few people lived in cities. Just like in the medieval days, they were mostly peasants working on their farms. The typical harvest would have been wheat, barely, rye, GRAPES, fruits, vegetables etc. Depending on where abouts in the empire you were, the food changes.
So like every well organised economy, peasants would grow lots of 2 or 3 things, transport it into the local village/town/city and sell there produce. Meat would NOT have been on the menu, unless it was salted or slaughtered at home.
You also has imports from Greece, Egypt, North Africa, Asia Minor (turkey) ect. Food was available but may not have been the freshest or best quality. Food was available in much the same way it was 200 years ago.

the sea and farms. They also collected tribute from foreign nations, such as getting corn from Egypt.
The volcanic soil in Rome and Italy make it a super producing agricultural site. That is why so many civilizations develop near volcanoes.
They actually ate quite well, at least the aristrocracy did.

To be honest I think there is no time limits for "food".What ever could be eaten to save man from starving. So long as man has been on the earth, hanger has been so has been the food.
