We were dicussing this in a group last night, apparently although Bin Laden commited the hugest crime of the milleneum so far, he also presented the country with a forgotten value: Unity. More people stand together as a nation, and more people display the flag at their doorstep. Is this criminal also a hero?

Note: I hate Bin Laden for his crimes as much as the rest of you, but please try to take this seriously.

I respectfully disagree. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor was, as you would say, the "hugest crime". America was united after the attack. Everyone shared the burden of the war either by fighting or rationing.

Today we are a divided nation and only those who serve, and their families, are making any sacrifice.

Bush used him (Bin Laden) to get re-elected, so perhaps in that respect, Bush would see him as an asset. After all, he never did capture him, did he?

It WAS true that Usamas actions and the resident of the White House's response brought the nation to a 90%+ approval rating for that response.
That's unity.
Further actions by George the Second have caused the greatest division in America since the Civil War. IMHO Bin Laden was a unifying factor but not a hero, except to Muslim EXTREMISTS.

Heros are not the only ones who can unite a nation. In fact, almost every time a people are brought together in strength, it's to fight an evil or oppressive foe.

Bin Ladin is a coward, not a hero.

I don't think that someone who has commited the crimes that he has and the lives he has affected in the attacks on your country and in others could ever be classed as a hero. On the other hand it probably did unite your country but i still don't think he is anywhere near being classed as a hero!

Not having thousands of Americans dead is more important than us being unified.

I understand where you are coming from, but the very little good that came from the attacks was outweighed by the enormous loss.

Besides, or country was only united for what? 2 years? Now all we do is argue, like we did before the attacks.

Unity in the US or Unity in the Middle East?

You cant be serious in saying it united the USA??? I think the opposite is true.

You're mistaking patriotism with unity.

A HERO? I'd be careful in your choice of words here.

He united us but Bush divided us. Now he's played right into Osama's hands by invading Iraq. Look at what a breeding ground it is now for hate-America Islamists. Osama said he wanted our soldiers over there where he could kill them more easily, and our stupid President obliges him. Bring the troops home and impeach Bush and Cheney for treason!

Which country did he unify? Saudi Arabia?

All he did was prove that terrorism is the most contemptable, despicable form of warfare because it targets innocent citizens.

Where's the heroism in that?

Nope. Bill Clinton did more to unite the Conservatives, just by getting a BJ.
