I work in a technical job and and we have contractors from India. The country seems to have come a long way with education but from what I see there is still a lot of poverty.

The people we work work are technically competent but it took a while to get them there. Even though they had the technical education it seems like it took a while to get them to do some free thinking. They could do repetitive jobs well but could not innovate. Perhaps the educational system or family structure doesn't support independent thinking.

What surprises me is that a technically up coming nation is so hung up with superstition and myth. On of the fellows got married to a girl his parents selected and only after the astrologers approved. It just baffles me that the nation hangs on to such garbage and claims to be modernizing

When I think of India, these words jump to mind: Advancing, progressive, crowded, lots of poverty but getting better, exotic, hot, religious, ancient, complicated

The people I have seen/met from India here in my small town are here because of a local international corporation. They bring in engineers from India. These are often young men with wives and maybe a small child. Our children play together on the playgrounds. They all seem to be very nice, intelligent, friendly people. I enjoy their presence here, even though they are only here for a year or two.

Happy Independence!

Well, I'm thinking about general lines of elephants and cows. And a vast social inequality between the castes. And crowds. Oh, and all that dancing. But India did come a long way. I could name a lot of prominent scientists of indian origin.
