My dang window A/C stinks like wet stinky feet! I mean it really stinks up the whole room. I dont want to shell out tons of money for someone to fix it nor do i want to shell out a ton of money for a new one. The problem actually started happening a few days after we got the thing last year. It's a frigidaire. Some days the stink is worse than others.

Things I have tried:
- spraying bleach into the intake (makes the house smell like bleach for a while)

I guess that's all i've tried.
Help! It's hot outside.

Window Air Conditioner Smells

I've run across this at a friend's house. The drain slots in the back are for condensate to flow out. If they get plugged, you in effect, get lake water. Grimy, slimy and stinky feet smelling. To thoroughly get rid of it, remove the a/c from the window and take it outside. If water spills out while you're carrying it, there's evidence it's not draining right. With a screwdriver or nut driver (whichever the case may be), remove the cover to expose the compressor and inner workings. Gross huh? A little of elbow grease combined with the strongest degreaser you got will clean it out. This gunk is the result of rain, leaves, dirt and lord knows what else blowing around outside getting sucked in. While you have this open, clean the condenser coil (the thing that looks like a car radiator that hangs outside) This being clean is essential to unit efficiency and longevity. Hit it with some cleaner and hose it down from the inside out. You can hit the evaporator (coil on the inside with the fins that bend when you touch them DONT TOUCH THEM!!) with a little Febreeze to take the stink out and like someone suggested a dryer sheet is ok but it my pull apart and clog the evap-bad news. Once the unit is clean and dry, put the cover back on and install in the window. The smell should be gone. The only other maintainence you will have to do is clean the condenser coil every year before you start it up. Just hit it with some cleaner and a hose from the outside, no need to take it apart this time. I know it sounds like a lot, but it will save you 400 bucks like someone suggested. It sounds like there is water trapped in it still from last season. You may want to try tipping it back and seeing if any water pours out. Be sure it is on a slant (slanting down toward outside) so the condensation has somewhere to run off to. Also, there should be a filter that slides out somewhere in the front of the unit. Pull that out and wash thoroughly with warm soapy water, rinse well and put back. I'm sure this will help. Good luck! :)

Sounds like the drain is plugged. Window air conditioners must drain the water they produce to the outside. Your drain is plugged and the water has become moldy and odiferous. Unplug the drain be sure the AC leans to the outside and the oder should dissapate in three weeks

have a professional clean it for you. LG charges 400 for each aircon cleaning (1 hp or less). That's a reasonable price rather than trying something else. Lemon kills odor fast. even the air freshner ones.
