these engines have to have a super good batteries, first, and then check the glow plug operation.if there is not glow plug ,on starting... the glow plugs heat the cylinder up so the diesel with ignite... check the circuit, fuses connections and always wait till the light goes off in the dash, before you try to start the engine. this light tells you when the cylinder is ready to ignite the diesel...

Ok, a hard cold start on a diesel is usualy contributed to faulty glow plugs. If you have a Hayne's Manual, it will walk you through the process of testing. Since you likely won't find a manual on your specific vehicle with the 6.5 diesel option, you'll need to do what I did, find the "Diesel Engine Repair" manual from Haynes, it covers 3 GM diesels including the 6.5, so it will be able to tell you what to test and how to test.
Other posibilities are a leak in your injector pump, a cracked fuel line, or any other problems with the fuel delivery system. If your injector pump or fuel lines are leaking, then every time you let it set for a while it will lose the pressure and some of the fuel in the line, and when you want to start it again, you will have to build that pressure back up, this is commonly mistaken for fualty glow plugs as it will cause a hard start.
Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about it. Hope this has helped, good luck.

Rare but it happens- injector timing, - My former bosses 6.5 had to started with WD-40. Either spray through the filter or place a rag across the fluted part (either is possible without removing the top of cover) and spray the rag. Much easier on it than Ether!!!!
