The tyre was 1 and half months old... it is for a Honda VTR 1000 and I do 60 miles a day with a little (15 miles) motorway. I had the tyre repaired with a plug which cost me £50, but I am wondering if I should replace the tyre completely (another £120) or whether this repair will be okay for a while?... this has the potential of costing me a lot of money......

Does anyone have any opinions?

Take the tire off, patch it from the inside and put in an inner tube.

Motorbike Puncture Repair

Well, the first thing I would do is find a new mechanic. They took you to the cleaners on the tire plug. You can buy a plug kit for less than $10.00 (US) at most motorcycle shops and do the repairs yourself!

Second... Tire plugs are temporary repairs, intended to get you off the side of the road, back to some pace where the tire can be permanently repaired or replaced. Do not expect a plug to last more than a few 100 miles. Your safest option is to replace the tire.

We are told that this type of repair is OK but I feel that as the tyre is your last remaining contact with the road you need to be 100% sure that they will stand up when you most need them to and hopefully this will never happen. If it does you would be sure to wish that you replaced that punctured tyre.

Me personally, I will not run on a tyre that has been punctured except as a get me home repair and I carry one of the instant repair and inflate aerosols

I feel that IF your brakes were to fail you then your tyres might just save your life, but IF your tyres were to fail you your brakes would probably kill you

Renew it and ride safe

Hope this helps

£50 for a tyre repair that's a joke some one is taking the mick it cost me £10 for my motorcycle tyre to be repaired that's with the plug & patch, went around scotland on it done a total of 4,000 miles so far on it my bike is a 600cc,

it your life & if you can live with it then no problem, if still wory buy a bottle of ultra seal they have a web site that will tell you all about it but lots of motorcycle riders put it in the tyre,
they demonstrate how good it is with a screw driver, its also good for high speed they say does not rot tyre,

If you go at high speed, I will be cautious because it's not a car with 4 wheels and if the tyre exploded you could have a fatal accident. If you post at normal road speeds (below 50kl/h) maybe you can get away with it. Get the tyre replaced but if you feel money is a bit tight, differ and get the tyre replaced as soon as you can afford, in the meantime just be cautious. All my days of riding, I've never ridden on a repaired tyre for a bike, but for a car will be alright, but even then without going over 60kl/ph

The jury is out on this, some will say it is OK, others not. Personally I would not risk it, I know it is a lot of money but you have a fairly powerful, torquey bike there with potential to reach some fairly high speed. If I were you I would go for piece of mind, bite the bullet and get a new tyre. Sorry but what price your safety?

you should never repair a motorcycle tyre, regardless of whether you can afford it mate. i have got a 600 bandit at the minute, and would never dream of repairing a tyre on it, as i was a tyre fitter for a few years, and know the risks involved. value your life above the price of a tyre xxx

I'd treat it as a very temporary measure. With a decent bike like that, a new tyre is the only safe answer.

If it's a tubeless tire, the better way to repair it (which still can be done) is to break the tire down and patch it from the inside.
A plug is a quick and dirty way to plug it, but not as good as an internal patch.
A lot has to do with WHERE the plug is. If too close to the side wall, it can weaken the sidewall cord structure in that area.
