It doesn't mean any specific foods. The Spartans tried to overcome all their bodily needs, deliberately choosing to eat little, have no creature comforts in their homes, and train rigorously. All this was supposed to make them better fighters. Now, however, it just means eating a meager diet by choice and denying oneself ordinary treats, whether in food or entertainment or furniture. Spartan chairs have no padding, and a Spartan diet has nothing beyond what is absolutely needed to keep the person alive. Spartan travel might be walking when a train is available or taking a third-class seat even if one could afford a first-class ticket. It is only Spartan if one denies ones self by choice -- the frugal diet of an impoverished person is not generally considered Spartan.
