..really believe everything happens for a reason? This came up in conversation last night, where I said "everythin happens for a reason", but do I honestly think this, "No" because I can't think of a reason for some one being raped, (and terrible things like that). So do people who say this really mean it! Maybe I'm over thinkin as usual!

No, not everything does happen for a reason but you can't change the past, so it's best to accept it, learn from it and move on. Some bad things can make you stronger but losing a child or other traumatic events can make a person fall to pieces.

The expression is trite, like all cliches. I suppose people say that when they are lost for words. Maybe some want to believe that it is true, as they feel that a positive could happen next to balance things out.

Maybe that rape was meant to happen so that that person could help others who had been raped. I'm an alcoholic and 'everything happens for a reason' is a popular saying in AA. I realize that without all the good and bad things that have happened in my life, I wouldn't be who I am today. There is a reason I went through 'hell' and it's so that I could understand that I needed help so that I could have a better life. It's a semi-spiritual saying and although I agree with you to an extent, it helps people to accept terrible things that seem to happen for 'no reason'. You can always find something good in something bad, even a rape or death of an innocent child. A child may die in a fire and influence someone else to become a fireman so he/she can save other people. You know what I mean?

Many times, people who believe that saying believe in a 'master plan' in the universe and that we are all part of it. A lot of times, God is involved with that way of thinking. I'm agnostic but I like to believe that saying is true.

I believe it is true, as I believe for every action there is a reaction

It just so happens that all things that happen do not always have a good ending, but something did lead up to the fact that someone was raped whether it was more of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or it being the upbringing of the rapist

Something did lead up to it and maybe it could have been prevented several different ways depending on the varying circumstances

I believe what is already going to happen to you in your lifetime and when and how you die is already part of your destiny and you can't change it.

Destiny defined:
an event (or a course of events) that will inevitably happen in the future
the ultimate agency that predetermines the course of events (often personified as a woman); "we are helpless in the face of Destiny"
fortune: your overall circumstances or condition in life (including everything that happens to you); "whatever my fortune may be"; "deserved a better fate"; "has a happy lot"; "the luck of the Irish"; "a victim of circumstances"; "success that was her portion"

So whatever is going to happen to you will

Our brains work by filtering information into coherent bundles. Imagine what it would be like otherwise, if all of your senses and thoughts were jumbled up together. That happens in dreams, except that another part of the brain makes a story out of it that makes some sense. At least until you wake up.

We do that same thing with our waking lives. 'Everything happens for a reason' is a quick and easy way of bundling and connecting what could be a random event in with everything else. So then we start looking for reasons.

Things happen. Sometimes they're related casually, often not. Life gets much easier when you learn to sort out which is which. You're off to a great start.

The saying "everything happens for a reason" is related to the belief that God has a plan for all of us. This means that every bad thing that happened is part of a grand scheme. however, it's not always us that benefits. When we keep asking for miracles or good thigs, sometimes instead of us at the receiving end of the miracle, we become the tools. (although this is not to say that the rapist just had a miracle). Sometimes, bad things happen in order to lead us somewhere where if utilized in a right way, will probably be the best thing that happened to us.

Every action has a future consequence. Something happens that will change the course of your life and lead you down a path you would never have taken. I know this for a fact. When I look back on the extremely bad things that happened to me in the past, I realize actions taken as a result have triggered in me doing something else that in the extreme long run actually benefited me. That is not to say I'm glad the bad stuff happened (although I wish something else was the cause of the changes of my life's path)

It think it's one of those phrases that just becomes a cliche...I guess some people really believe it because it becomes part of their belief system but maybe there is some truth to that statement. Some people say that there are forces working in the universe that ulimatley pull us towards certain events but I just beleive bad things happen because of sin and good things happen because God loves us : )

Here is a reason. The rapist has a over active sex drive, a power complex. Lack of respect for woman due to his past experience which makes him cross the line and rape (this is one possible reason). Not always a direct reason, but there is always a reason ven though it is not obvious.

Generally when people say that, they are referring to a situation that had a secondary result (usually a good one) due to the situation.
For Example: You wreck your car on the way to the airport and miss your flight. The plane goes down but you are not on it.
Sorry for the morbid example.

well it is believed that everything does happen for a reason whether we know it or not. Sometimes its because someone hasnt been given enough assistance or help to get through their situation. Sometimes it is God that is trying to tell us something. Sometimes, we dont want to listen to God and we go and our way and things stuff up.
