You swine! I opened this all ready to blast your foolishness with a great answer! Dammit!!!
I think many people in many government's would love to eliminate the free press ... I'm sure Blair (I am the UK) would love to have only government briefings. If nothing else, it would save them having to work out which are the "good" days to make embarrassing or problematic announcements: they simply would not make them.

We've allready seen how this would work. Tony Snow (Job), is a good example why this would not work.To rely on the government to tell us the truth would be to give up another freedom we as Americans enjoy. Freedom of the Press. The only TV news that has a liberal bent is MSNBC, and that depends on who is reporting it. The News media, in years past was conbsidered the watchdog for politics, but no more. Now with deregulation and consolidation of the news media, into a few unregulated monopolies, the watchdog has been muzzled. Repubicans always say that the media is against them. This is nothing but a smokescreen, to keep thier hidden agenda, hidden.

Maybe a trade can be made, the liberal crap is directed at some of the TV/news media but never talks about the radio, that has been invaded by the likes of Rush that have no intent to discuss news but to disseminate total crap.
So we kill the entire "news" media and just have cspan showing the live crap and when the Pres. holds a news conference in front of real not picked people.

Nope... Although if the Dems take over in '08 that's about what it will amount to.
How about the media try this novel concept...
RESEARCH and REPORT the FACTS, not the Dem talking points!
I really pity those who are so far to the left that they think CNN is "balanced." Fox News is as guilty of any of the others when it comes to sensationalizing stories (for that I blame the ratings war), but they make a concerted and obvious effort to show BOTH sides of every issue. (I'll admit Hannity does go overboard, but at least he manages to shake the libs off their talking points enough to get an idea what they really think.)
(Oh, and I don't care about Bradgelina, Lohan or Paris--enough already!)

I don't think they (or any politician) want to eliminate the media since it also serves them. I think politicians want to do what they want without anyone knowing about it. I think the scrutiny is so much on the Republicans because of the Bush cabinet. Watching the O'Reilly factor as well as Fox news, I get the feeling that anyone who doesn't agree with the Republicans or give them carte blanche they label as a liberal. Somehow...they have made the word liberal dirty and obscene. If the Republicans got rid of the media they would also have to get rid of Fox news...O'Reilly...and their little band of patriots. Then you would have all these rich people running around...with no job...and they would flood the welfare and unemployment office....oohhhhh....what would they do then? Seriously....if you aren't trying to do anything deceitful...underhanded...or illegal...what do you care who knows what? Me think they doth protest too much.

The news media is not a legitimate source of information, nor is the governement. if you want to see their side of the story then go to them for a biased opinion of the facts. The news media presents itself as having 'journalistic integrity' and ethics, the fact of the matter is that that is bullshit. The republican party in the US will tell you what it wants you to know, and likewise about the democratic party. Your best source of info is your own representatives. Make them account to you for their actions and make them act on your feedback.
Watching politicians make decisions and reading about it in the newspaper or watching it on Fox is like watching a sporting even on the TV in the bathroom of the arena in which it is played instead of playing in the game yourself. Politics is a useless activity where people talk all day and don't get anything done.
**** the news media and **** politicans.

It's not necessary to eliminate the "liberal" media. Just keep pressuring them through their corporate owners.Threaten prosecution, put reporters in jail for refusing to disclose sources, leak information to them then accuse them of treason for printing it... allow Murdoch and others like him to purchase more stations and newspapers...soon, all the media outlets will be "fair and balanced".

Yes, they do. The GOP would have us believe that the 'Trickle Down' theory is working in spite of Silverado, WorldCom and Enron. They would have us believe that Newt Gingrich had a Contract with America' rather than a Contract on America.' They would have us believe 'Mission Accomplished' but 3,000 US soldiers have lost their lives since the mission was declared successful. They would have us believe that Katrina and Wilma are the reasons for $3.50/gal gasoline. Freedom of the press allows for honest reporting, but it also allows for idiots like Rush Limbaugh.

I would just like to watch the news without it being biased, and without an "American Idol" update every 3 minutes, or some sort of celebrity "update". Celebrities are not news, if I wanted to know what they're up to I'd look to the internet or the supermarket tabloids, not the evening news.
