It needed a new battery. I got one. Now when I turn the key I hear a strange noise. The engine is not turning over. What is the noise? What should I check?

Simple circuit. Make sure battery is connected correctly, and charged of course. Next, if a solenoid exists in the circuit, replace it too if it sat in the weather for a long time, this will give you a click, or clicking noise when you turn the key, if the solenoid took a dump on you. Next, be sure to spray your ignition switch, and all contacts on it, and the whole circuit with contact cleaner fluid, get that at any auto parts store. Make sure all wires are clean, without breaks, and that the ground wires are grounded, usually always black in color, or green on some machines. If you still have trouble, I'd consult a mechanic to find the real root of the problem. Good Luck.

When you turn the key and you hear a noise like the starter is trying to turn, but doesn't would indicate a bad starter.

When you turn the key the starter teeth engage and spin the flywheel starting the motor. Chances are the sound you hear is the starter not engaging the flywheel. This usually sounds like a hummmm sound or a click click click sound. The starter probably is missing teeth or is otherwise bad replace it.

I too got a new battery for my lawn tractor and upon installing it all I got was a .....click. I checked all the wires, seemed ok. Negative ground wire is a culprit in many occasions but mine was good.
Using a test light (12v) I got a light on the battery side of the starter relay switch, but not on the starter side....that was it!

A clicking noise would indicate either a wrongly installed battery (negative is grounded to the body) or low battery voltage, or bad solenoid to bad/corroded connections....
