I doubt most areas would provide cable/DSL connections without you having to pay since these type connections are usually regional in nature. It's better to go dial-up unless you really need the speed.
If you are in the US, you need an ISP that has alot of local numbers nationwide to access in order avoid toll phone charges, or...one that has a toll-free access number. My parents travel a lot in their motor home and use AOL for that reason. I am sure there are some others that have a lot of national coverage, but just be sure to check the areas that you think you may travel to the most for local access numbers.
Your laptop will have a plug in for the phone line, so you will need a short line to plug in to it. I always carry my own, but I have also unplugged the phone in the room too and used it.
I would be careful about wireless use, as this leaves your computer open for potential trouble.

if you have wireless, nothing
if you dont then you just need a network card, and a network cable these have a slighlty larger jack on the them than a phone cord
If the hotel does not offer high speed internet then you just need a phone cord and a toll free number to your internet provider (but caution, event though the number is toll free often there is a charge.)
Hotels often boast of there wireless connection and high sped internet but often times comes with a price at resorts. Hoilday Inn and other chains do have truly free internet access.

If the hotel is wired then... u just need to plug the network cable to ur laptop... the connection will be instantaneous... nothing is required.
If the hotel has a wireless connectivity at place then...u will need a WLAN card... just ask for a "11b or 11g PCMCIA WLAN card"... before trying the connection ask for the connection details to the hotel staff... they shall help you out.

You need to tell us a little more about your laptop. If it is recent (manufactured within the last year), the answer is , nothing. You do need to ensure that transceiver is enabled.
