I had posted a question about my red-cap oranda and someone thinks that it has dropsy. Well... I try to change its water one or twice everyday, keep the water temperature higher than usual, and put salt in with it. I have been doing that for 3 days now. Recently, its scales protrude less, it does not look as bloated as before, and it hang out on the surface less then before, but it is still not eating. Is my goldfish getting better? Are there any hope that it will get well soon? Are there anything else I can do to help my goldfish?

My goldfish is eating now! Not a lot, but little by little. I thought it was going to died that night since dropsy is very hard to cure and it is my first time taking care of any pet. I was so happy to see it alive the next day when I put on the last post. And now, it has been almost 4 days and it shows signs of getting better. My first step of becoming a veterinarian :P Thanks everyone, I will take a very good care of my fish!

You seem to be doing great my friend. Keep it up, you are doing everything by the books. Goodluck and fast-heal wishes for your fish.

Treat the dropsy with Maracyn2. It's the only medication I've seen that specifically treats it, and it works! You can get it at petsmart or petco. Walmart doesn't have it. Start it ASAP, dropsy is deadly if not treated soon enough . Maracyn2 also treats alot of other diseases/illnesses in fish, even more than is described on the package. If you just used the bactopur recently, do a partial water change before changing the medication. If you think it needs medication for other problems, Maracyn2 can also be used simultaneously with Maracyn, if you think it needs a different kind as well. They are both antibiotics, just different kinds. If you think the fish is constipated, feed it a couple of blanched frozen pes with the skin removed, and mashed up a little bit. that will help it poo. Good luck, I hope he makes it!

There is the poissibility that it will get better on it's own, but that is very slim indeed. I think what you are seeing is a temporary improvement fromt he salt addition as well as less bloating due tot he fish not eating, but remember a fish that will not eat is a sick fish (with a few notable exceptions of course). Continue what you are doing certainly, but I would suggest you also add antibiotics to your treatment. Considering the internal nature of the problem you need a powerful and easily absorbed antibiotic. The best choice is Furanace. If that is not available then I would suggest tetracycline. You fish may seem better, but unless you help it get rid of the infection the improvement is probably very temporary.

The most you can do for the fish is keep the tank at 82-86 degrees and use epsom salts (1/8 teaspoon of epsom salts per 5 gallons) instead of aquarium salts because they will help the fish to lose some of the fluid that has built up. It is also wise to increase aeration since the temps will be higher. Water quality is very important at this time. This will have to be tried for about 2 weeks. Now if you think the fish is suffering from parasites you will need to treat for them first. Look at this picture of a goldfish with servere dropsy http://www.fishpondinfo.com/dropsy1.jpg and http://www.fishpondinfo.com/dropsy2.jpg. Remember Dropsy is very hard to get rid and does not go away usually.
