Clean the house, and make sure you open all the windows on sunny days for at least 10 minutes a day. Air anything you can outside at least once a year -- more often for bedding and blankets.

Then, when the house is basically clean, you can add nice scents -- like try boiling cinnamon or vanilla extract on the stove. Or get some essential oils, and put them in a potpourri warmer. I like lavender. Or bring in fresh flowers with strong scents -- old-fashioned roses, peonies, lilacs, etc.

Be aware that some people react badly to strong scents, and may not want to be in your house with them. But you can't go wrong with cleanliness and fresh air!

BTW, baking soda is great for freshening carpets. Sprinkle on the carpet, leave overnight (or at least an hour), then vacuum it up.

Hi There,
Good idea those chemical ones are sooo nasty for you.
Other than potpourri, burning candles and the oil burners. I have simply dropped a few drops of a favorite essential oil
into the vaccuum bag. Mixed into a mist sprayer with water or hydrogen peroxide (kills germ too then) and number of drops and spray in air. I've used a couple drops on a small cloth and tucked in pillow cases, under couch cushions. I've used drops on a nightlight or lightbulb that warms up and disperses the scent. Try a few drops on a cloth in your dryer, thats really nice. Even try making your own cleaners (easy really and way cheaper and as effective I find), using baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, lemons, and similar (lots of recipes online if you google natural cleaning products) and then you can once again use essential oils in them I like to use tea tree oil (antibacterial, anti fungal) and I love Rosemary and Lavendar, and citrus is fresh and clean too.

Good Luck! I hope you find some faves.

use flower petals to make some air freshener. pick off the petals from the flower and put it in a glass. pour a boiling water over the petals. let it stand for an hour or until the water is in normal temperature. put the liquid (use strainer)in you sprayer then spray. you can add more petals if the scent is not picking up.
