Trust the baby. He'll stop when he is uncomfortable.
The burping thing is a little worrisome, though. Do you have an experienced mom you can talk to? Your own mom, your husband's mom or a neighbor? They can give it a try, and you won't feel like you are crazy if the baby won't burp for them. Or maybe they can show you a little technique that helps. It's so hard to learn this stuff from books!
Your hospital should have a hotline so you can talk to a nurse, and see if eating that much is out of line. Be sure and keep a feeding log that says when and how much the baby ate. Every baby is different, but they do fall in "normal" ranges usually.
Good luck! And congratulations!

My second child (I have 5), was 9.1lb when he was born and he was ravenous all the time! I fed him myself and I had loads of milk. (I could fill a 9 ounce bottle from each side!) He would eat from me and then have a couple of ounces from a bottle too. He put on over a pound a week for a while. My health visitor nagged me and said I was feeding him too much. She had no children of her own! I told her if she could think of anything else which would shut him up, she was welcome to try. He was just so greedy and screamed his head off until he was fed. By the time he was 8 months old, he weighed 29.6lb and could eat 3 weetabix! He is now 13 and very healthy. He is not overweight and doesn't overeat. You can get a baby milk for hungrier babies so I'd try that if I was you and if it's hot, try him with some boiled water as he may just need fluid. Also, when babies have a growth spurt, they tend to eat more often and then it settles down again. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Even if he does put a lot of weight on, he'll soon lose it when he gets mobile. Good luck and congratulations!

Hey,
My son was like that...
But I was breastfeeding not to sure if you are though{I know you said about ounces but you can be expressing}...
You should talk to the doctor at his check up or make an appointment to go see a doctor about it...
With the burping my son had the worst time ever we could sit there for over an hour trying and trying to burp him and nothing!
I found giving him a tiny tiny little bit of water would help...
Or pushing his legs up {bending at the knees} would help a little...
Also we would sit him on our knee trying to burp if he wouldn't we lift him up and hold him up in the air for a second {feet pointing down} then sit him back down and he would burp then. Maybe stop every 10mins or so while feeding and see if that helps...
It was the most frustrating thing ever! Esspecially at 3am!
Maybe try giving him an ounce an hour may help also.
He will get used to eating so much and your baby will just eat and eat all day everyday!
Here are some burping site for you to have a look at

Your baby might not be hungry but being a new parent you haven't worked out what all the different crying means.
He might be:-
Bored
Uncomfortable
Tired - They should sleep 16 to 18 hours in a 24 hour period
Want their nappy changed
Don't feed him unless it is time to feed which is 3 to 4 hours for a breastfeed baby & 4-5 hours for a bottle feed baby. Feeding him very hour will not help the situation your just masking it for another hour.
Breastfeed babies don't need to be force burped like formula feed babies as it is a thinner milk & is watery at the start to quench their thirst & heavy at the end to fill them up.
His crying sounds like it could be wind or gas & some gripe water will help that.

I think at this age a baby is too young to decide when he is full. They will just eat and eat and eat and they don't know any better. I would call your dr and find out what you should do. They might want you to put him on a schedule.
another thing you can do is instead of feeding him, give him a pacifier. Babies naturally like to suck and if you keep putting a bottle in his face, that's what he will do is suck, even though he isn't even hungry. You might be over-feeding him so try a pacifier first and if that doesn't satisfy him, then feed him. But if he's still eating like this even after trying a pacifier first, you should call the dr.

Put him on a dietary plan. He is much too young to realize when he is full and will continue to stretch his stomach until he can fit more and more. Just make sure you keep what you feed him constant and slowly move up as he begins to age and it is clear that he is just not getting enough to remain comfortable. If the baby cries right after you take the bottle out remain calm. They do this because they are not necessarily hungry but they want the comfort of the bottle. Just rock and burp him. Also bringing a babies arms closer to his chest is a comforting position for newborn babies. Good luck and congrats on your bundle of joy!

MY son ate soo much as a little baby..We went through formula like it was going out of style...I found that giving him more at one time helped...if he is drinking 4-5 oz and then 1 hr later taking more make an 6-8oz bottle and see if he will eat more at one sitting...GOod Luck..A lot of this is trial and error. :) I know how you feel my son was a big eater and still is at almost 9 months

I was a 9 pound baby and my mom fed me 6 oz at a time starting at birth.
My daughter had the same problem as your son does. Which I thought she was hungry, but turns out she was gassy. I've also heard that if you make the formula with packed scoops it'll cause this reaction.

I'm not sure because my daughter was born at 6lb 7oz. I do know though that they told me not to feed my daughter more than an ounce at a time because she was too little. Not sure if all babies should only eat that little but my daughter seemed happy with about an ounce at each feeding. Maybe you should call the hospital and ask them.

My bub used to like to comfort suck all the time. Maybe try him on a dummy in between feeds.
It doesn't matter if he doesn't burp every feed. Mine hardly did. Burping makes the parents feel good. If they don't burp straight away they probably won't no matter how much you try.
Congrats.
