The distinguishing factor between life and non-life is the ability to delay and prioritize actions according to the needs of complex internal values. It is the complexity which necessitates prioritization for all values to be gratified optimally.

I would suspect the question you are asking is where one finds meaning. Meaning arises from within, with the perception that one is made of value or "atom-ically" speaking many small varied and complexly interrelated values. The perception of value as the substance of self dynamically places you in charge of your own gratification.
