She is a great horse but i'm worried there is something wrong, and because i'm only a beginner, i wouldn't know. She lays her ears back when i mount her, but shows no inclination of wanting to rear, buck etc. Then refuses to move.

She's 17 years old. Give her a break. She might have a sore leg/hoof. Feeling some arthritis, or just under the weather.
Something likely hurts or she wouldn't put her ears back.
If she's making no effort to dismout you, you should get a vet to check her out.

Its hard to say without looking. Either the horse is in pain somewhere, or it has the better of you. You should have someone knowledgeable to look at her, maybe even try ride her to determine the problem. She may just be a little bit lazy and realise that you aren't real certain what you are doing yet and be taking advantage, or it might be that there is something wrong with her. I would suggest asking someone with a little more experience to look at her, like if she is agisted, perhaps someone at the centre could help, otherwise call the vet. But remember when asking advice from other horse owners, she is your horse and if you aren't happy with what they are saying or doing with your horse, tell them thanks for their opinion and do what you think is right. For some reason a lot of horse people think they are an instant expert the minute someone with less experience comes along. You will do just fine though, you are looking for solutions and will learn a lot just by listening to others.

I am sorry to say so, but you need more riding lessons. I have been where you are, it has to do with the way you are sitting on her, the way you are putting your legs, how you hold the reins, etc. There's nothing wrong with the horse, and there's nothing wrong with you, but as you said you are a beginner. There is really no way to explain this over the net. I had the same problem, and the horse would trot and gallop as soon as the teacher got on her, and there was no apparent difference in what she was doing compared to what I was doing. But the horse would not move with me on!lol
