How about, because it was a feral pig. In case you don't know what that means, it is a domesticated animal that escapes (or is released) into the wild (probably not it's natural habitat). He was doing the environment a favour. While I don't eat pork, I'm sure his family is going to eat bacon for a long time.
For those of you who have a problem with this, I hope you're veggies and don't wear any leather. Otherwise you are being a bit hypocritical. Why is it wrong to kill your own meat, but OK to let someone else do it for you.
Oh and the question betrays a very silly small minded reactionary response to the story. Why not ask why so many people around the world eat poor beautiful animals, why single out this kid? Because you're just reacting and not thinking for yourself.

Basically, for the same reason people buy Hormel hams at the grocery: this will provide 700 pounds of meat for his family. In addition, these feral hogs are very dangerous, like bear or cougar, and even if they weren't fearless & aggressive toward people, they can damage thousands of dollars worth of crops in a matter of days.

Because it was there! Wild feral hogs and hogs like the Black Boar do an immense damage to farms. A feral hog will go wild, literally growing tusks after he is on the loose, something that he would not do in a hog pen. They will eat anything, tear up crops, tear down fences, tear down chicken pens and about anything else.

I agree with you boland m. I would've much rather seen
it shot with a camera. If it's encroaching on farmland,
relocate it to a preserve somewhere!
Hey guys! That animal is amazing! A legend! Let's go f'ing kill it. Brilliant. Lots of brainpower being exercised there

You've never been a farmer, or else you would realize the damage that a hog the size of a Ford Fiesta would do to your crops.

If you are so opposed to hunting wild feral pigs, why don't you offer your home as a preserve for them, pay to have them captured, pay to have them transported to your land, and pay to feed them for the rest of their natural lives on your wonderful preserve so you can enjoy their tremendous beauty?

Because that was where the hog was at. Should have he taken it to dothan and shot it?
